Synopsis

Produced in New York with Ethel Barrymore in the leading roler.

For 39 years Granny has treasured her own coffin in the attic, lined with water silk and equipped with brass handles, while she sat by the fireplace and dreamed of yesterdays and saw ghosts and weird portents in ordinary circumstances.

Yet despite her mental attitudes, she is shrewd enough to detect the wiles and the scheming of progress reaching out to envelop the Gerart farm.

The Gerart men are roaring bullies, each in turn arousing hatred in his son and each being killed by his wife.

Son Jan is married to Naomi, a neighbor girl who is orphaned by an influenza epidemic, but now he holds himself aloof from her in fear that the family history will be repeated.

The curse of breeding hate is on Jan, and the attempt of the aviation industry to penetrate the desert and absorb the Gerart farm brings on furthr conflict.

The representative of the development comes to buy the farm, and with him comes a woman who nearly manages to resolve disaster out of the already bad situation.

But Granny fixes that and fixes it permanently.
