The Enchanted Maze
Paul Green
If Parker Richardson Endicott III dies without leaving an heir, the Endicott Trust (which contains Central Park, among other things) will pass to his villainous cousins.
Endicott draws his lawyer and trusted servants, Joe and Marie Pantry, into a plot.
He persuades the Pantrys to raise their infant son, Paul, as Parker Richardson Endicott IV, to be known as Cotty.
If he has not been unmasked by his 21st birthday, he may claim the trust.
The musical follows Cotty as he makes his way through the schools and social rituals that make a Pantry into a preppy.
Character
---
Muffy Angelica Livermore Atwater. As angelic as her name. She was brought up under a strict set of rules, but they are chafing, and Cotty looks like he could scratch that itch.
Bogsy The villain, the dark side of preppydom. To him, everything in the world can be translated into dollars and cents. (The actor playing the part doubles as the father, Bogswater.)
Marie Pantry Cotty’s real mother. She is torn between the wonderful world her son has entered secretly and her need to have him know she is his mother.
Joe Pantry Cotty’s real father. Not a strong man, he leapt at the chance to make his son an Endicott, but second thoughts arose, and in the end his need to tell the truth helps save the day.
Endicott The preppiest man in the world. His needs set the plot in motion. He is a strong man used to getting his way. (The actor playing this part can take the parts of all the Authority Figures in the play, though those parts – The Admissions Officer, The Headmaster, the Major D’Oumo, Mr. Bonifacio, and the Bishop – may be individually cast according to the needs of the individual production.)
Lallie One of Cotty’s contemporaries. Shopping is really “it” for her.
Skipper Another of Cotty’s contemporaries, born with a silver spoon in his mouth. (Also plays Mr. Atwater, Muffy’s father, a man who believes in the three-martini breakfast.)
Jinks A friend of Muffy’s and Bogsy’s. (Also plays the Endicott Lawyer, a man just unscrupulous enough.)
Steffie Pretty and blonde, she seems to be always half a step behind.
Bitsy She knows that boys and charge accounts are what matter in life. (Also plays Muffy’s mother, Mrs. Atwater.)
Bookie More generous than his friend Bogsy, he is the first to welcome Cotty into their circle. He also knows that a good trust fund can keep you warm in the coldest weather.
Cotty His full name is Parker Richardson Endicott IV. He is our hero, an innocent in a sinful world.
