Edward Albee's The Goat, Or, Who Is Sylvia?
Edward Albee
Bill Fast, an old gentleman, has lost the great love of his life, his wife.
He finds a surrogate for her in a young waitress, Cara.
She so reminds him of his lost love that he finds himself falling in love with her and, in effect, with his wife all over again.
When he begins to pay attention to Cara and spend money on her, his old sister becomes jealous and afraid, jealous because certain affections are not going to her and afraid that she won't inherit brother Bill's considerable estate.
The conclusion is sad but happy at the same time.
Of the play's presentation in the West Coast Ensemble's Celebration of One-Act Plays, the Dramalogue wrote, "Old Goat Song is the shiniest jewel among the gems, a dying man's ballad to love and life...Tasca has captured the urgency of the present with the poetry of the past in his portrait of Bill Fast."
Unit set.
