Synopsis

How well does any grandson know his grandfather?

Dividends explores the generation gap between a struggling young artist and his Jewish grandfather.

Neal, the grandson, finds himself forced to look after his 83-year-old grandfather after he falls ill.

While caring for him, Neal learns a great deal about his grandfather's life, including the fact that he never had a bar mitzvah.

When Neal decides to give his father the bar mitzvah he never had, the grandfather's wife of fifty-nine years hovers over both as only a Jewish grandmother could.

Dividends is a warm and tender play about traditions, caring, change and love.

Press Reviews

"Although Gary Richards' "Dividends" is about a specific Jewish family in New York, this heartwarming drama raises universal issues of inter-generational communication, ancestral legacies and family obligations. These large themes intersect in a story...that is told at human scale. It involves no spectacle or theatrical wowing, just a steady probing of the heart."
