John Peter Tremble, a prominent citizen in town has recently passed away.
To the office of young lawyer Alan Harper come the three daughters of the deceased: Esther, Emmaline, and Edna.
Each has her own image of what and who Papa was, and each is confident that she is the sole heiress of his estate.
The lawyer has a surprise for all of them which at first seems shocking and disastrous -- but even his dark cloud proves to have a silver lining.
