Paul Shyre was born in New York City to Louis Philip Shyre and Mary Lee on March 8, 1929. He was a playwright, director, and actor who specialized in the works of Sean O’Casey. In 1957, Shyre received a Tony Award and two Drama Desk Awards for PURPLE DUST and PICTURES IN THE HALLWAY. He received acclaim for his other plays DRUMS UNDER THE WINDOWS, I KNOCK AT THE DOOR, and A WHITMAN PORTRAIT, all of which are published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
