Synopsis

Valère and Lucile are in love with each other, but Lucile's father wants her to marry a wealthy old man instead.

Not to worry, a plot is hatched — Lucile will pretend to be sick, and Valère will send his servant Sganarelle, disguised as a doctor, to attend to her.

The bogus doctor will recommend to Lucile's father that she should be moved to a more healthy location (where Valère and she can secretly reunite and marry).

What could possibly go wrong?

Plenty.

In the end, Sganarelle ends up having to be two people at the same time.
