Cross and Sword

The title of this symphonic drama is apropos to the subject: the colonization, conquest, and conversion of the Florida peninsula by the Spanish in the 16th century, and the establishment of the first permanent settlement in America at St. Ausustine.

The action abounds in color, song, and splendid lyrics.

The style is vibrant, with dances, dreams and nightmares, and even a Christmas masque with Indian children.

The tale is that of Menendez, who came to Florida on the feast day of St. Augustine and established a colony.

Difficulties developed, first, when the colony was starving and the Indians would not lend them corn to eat; and again when the married Menendez insulted the Indian chief by declining marriage to his sister.

It seemed to Menendez that the only hope of survival was to turn his back on proselytizing the Indians, and engage them in battle.

A great history began in this tragic thrall.
