Clara's Play
John Olive
In a South Philadelphia kitchen, Jack, an Ivy League-educated man, has come to court Clara while her “ole man” is at work.
However, his efforts are thwarted by Big Girl and three young men; Stoogie, Bama, and Hoss, who are seeking refuge in Clara’s apartment.
Jack soon discovers that Clara’s “ole man” is Big Girl and they are in a relationship with one another.
Character
---
MR. JONES A light-skinned man, 30. Horn-rimmed glasses, crew cut and small, smart mustache. He speaks in a clipped manner when in control of himself but is more than self-conscious, even from the beginning. Whatever MR. JONES speaks is unlike the popular conception of how a Black man speaks. Not even the fallacious accent acquired by many "cultured" or highly-educated should be sought, but that general cross-fertilized dialect found on various Ivy League campuses and those of the University of California. He sports an ascot.
CLARA A light brown girl of 18, well-built with long, dark hair. A blond streak runs down the middle of her hair, and she affects a ponytail. She is pensive, slow in speech, but feline. Her eyes are heavy-lidded and brown; she smiles – rather blushes, often.
ROGER
A.T. CARPENTIER A large dark man in his late 30s. He speaks in blustering orations, many times mispronouncing words. His tone is stentorian, and his voice has an absurdly ridiculous affected accent.
BIG GIRL A stocky woman wearing jeans and tennis shoes and a tight-fitting blouse which accents her attributes. She is of an indeterminable age, due to her lack of make-up and plain hairstyle. She is anywhere from 25 to 40 and is loud and jolly frequently breaking out in laughter from her own jokes.
DORA
BILL 22, Black.
JACK 20 years old, wears a corduroy Ivy League suit and vest. At first, Jack's speech in modulated and too eloquent for the surroundings, but as he drinks his words become slurred and mumbled.
PAUL
SUE 20, White.
BABY GIRL BIG GIRL'S teenage sister who has developmental disabilities. The girl has the exact same hairdo as CLARA. Her face is made up with mascara and eye shadow, and she has black arching eyebrows penciled darkly, same as CLARA.
LEONARD 21, White.
MISS FAMIE A drunken neighbor.
MISS MOSKOWITZ Mid-30s. An aging professional student.
STOOGIE A local firefighter and gang leader. His hair is processed.
MARTHA An attractive Black woman.
BAMA One of Stoogie's boys.
| ANY NUMBER OF
INTERRACIAL STUDENTS To supply background, short of the point of discouraging a producer. |
HOSS Another one of Stoogie's boys.
C.C. A young wino.
