About this show

The war on sign language began as a war on love. In 1816, Deaf pioneer Laurent Clerc arrives in America from France: ambitious, brilliant and determined to prove that he can stand as an equal in a hearing world. Together with the young Reverend Thomas Gallaudet, Clerc sets out to build something extraordinary: a school where Deaf children can learn, communicate and imagine a future beyond isolation. But when Clerc falls in love and announces his intention to marry a Deaf woman, the life he has built is thrown into crisis. The school’s future is at stake. Clerc must choose between the institution he has devoted his life to and the future he has begun to imagine for himself. Inspired by the life of ‘The Father of the Deaf’ Laurent Clerc, The Quiet Revolution of Laurent Clerc is a ferocious and funny exploration of love, ambition and the roots of sign language – and a story about the choices we make when the life we want comes at a cost. Performed through spectacular visual language, four modalities of sign language, spoken English, French and creative captions, this unique play brings Deaf history vividly to life while asking profoundly universal questions about identity, belonging, love and the price of change.

About Park Theatre

The Park Theatre is one of London’s most dynamic Off-West End venues, known for bold programming, fresh writing, and a strong community spirit. Since opening in 2013, it has become a vital creative hub in Finsbury Park, presenting a mix of new plays, revivals, and international work across its two intimate spaces.

With a strong focus on accessibility, affordability, and artistic excellence, Park Theatre champions emerging talent and underrepresented voices — earning a reputation as one of London’s most important smaller theatres.

The history of the Park Theatre

Opened in 2013, Park Theatre was founded by artistic director Jez Bond and actor Andy Nyman. Built from a converted office block just moments from Finsbury Park Station, the venue was developed with a clear mission: to bring high-quality theatre to the local community while supporting new voices in the industry.

With support from high-profile patrons including Ian McKellen and Alan Rickman, Park Theatre quickly rose to prominence. It now houses two performance spaces — Park200, a 200-seat main theatre, and Park90, a flexible studio space — and has premiered numerous acclaimed productions, many of which have transferred to the West End and beyond.
