The history of Sadler’s Wells

Sadler’s Wells has a rich history dating back to 1683, when Richard Sadler opened the original music house around a medicinal well. Over the centuries, it evolved from a spa venue to a music hall, and finally, a respected theatre dedicated to dance. The current building, opened in 1998, is the sixth on the site and was purpose-built for dance, offering state-of-the-art acoustics and production facilities.

The nearest tube station to Sadler’s Wells is Angel (Northern Line). It’s a 5-minute walk from the tube. Just exit the station, turn left on Islington High Street, and walk straight onto St John Street until you reach Rosebery Avenue - Sadler’s Wells will be on your left.

The closest National Rail station is King’s Cross St Pancras, which is one stop away on the Northern Line from Angel or around a 20-minute walk. From King’s Cross, you can also take several buses directly to the theatre.
