The general's widow is entertaining two generations of friends, neighbors and family.

On display is the gamut of human behavior comic, pathetic, dignified, visionary, blinkered in a society to whom history is about to speak.

This play is a theatrical meditation on the imaginative Russian film makers' reworking of themes from Chekhov's short fiction and plays, most notably Platonov.
