About this show

Raise the alarm, the original West End cast return to THE COMEDY ABOUT SPIES, joined by Bryony Corrigan, for a limited 8-week summer season at London’s Adelphi Theatre. Mischief’s most critically claimed adventure is ‘bigger, better and more brilliantly bungling than ever’ (Daily Mail). Following a sold-out 2025 season, the award-winning BEST NEW PLAY (WhatsOnStage Awards 2026) is the latest hilarious mission from the team behind The Play That Goes Wrong, Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About a Bank Robbery. When a rogue British agent pilfers plans for a top-secret weapon, CIA and KGB spies converge on London’s Piccadilly Hotel in pursuit of the elusive file. ‘Abandon yourself to the madness’ (The Times) and join a clueless young couple, a hapless actor angling for an exciting spy movie role, and enough double agents to confuse even the sharpest operative, in a mission that’s hilariously out of control. This ‘breathlessly funny’ (Time Out) and uproarious 1960’s spy escapade bursts with enough confused missions, tangled identities, and miscommunication to ‘leave you crying helpless tears of laughter’ (Guardian). What the critics say

1/10
The Guardian (UK)
I was crying helpless tears of laughter within the first five minutes, and at several other moments throughout, not least during a line about a haunted leaflet that would take a paragraph to explain.
Ryan GilbeyRead review
Time Out London
It’s often breathlessly funny, but there’s also a whiff of self-indulgence.
Tom WickerRead review
The Telegraph (UK)
I’d say it takes near genius to fashion something this incorrigibly goofy.
Dominic CavendishRead review
WhatsOnStage
The lavishness of the staging sometimes feels at odds with the makeshift jollity that is Mischief’s stock-in-trade. This is clearly going to be an enormous popular hit.
Alun HoodRead review
The Stage (UK)
The whole thing’s a visual treat; montages dangling Lance down a lift shaft, and spinning Douglas in a washing machine, are particularly inspired.
Holly O'MahonyRead review
The Times (UK)
“Matt DiCarlo’s intricately calibrated production is a miracle of comic timing and ensemble acting.
Clive DavisRead review
The Arts Desk
This is an evening of daft, uncomplicated fun.
Veronica LeeRead review
London Theatre
Even for Mischief, this is an ambitious show, with rarely a pause in the action.
Aliya Al-HassanRead review
Theatre Weekly (UK)
This finely tuned machine of comic timing and theatrical chaos is possibly Mischief’s best work yet, offering audiences exactly what they have come to expect – and love – from this troupe. For those in need of a good laugh and a bit of escapist fun, The Comedy About Spies is a mission you should choose to accept.

Critic review
It’s a brilliant reminder of Mischief Theatre’s flair for transforming theatrical catastrophe into comedic gold.

About Adelphi Theatre

The Adelphi Theatre is a well-known West End venue in London, located on the Strand in the City of Westminster. The building you see today is the fourth to exist on the spot. The theatre specialises in musicals and comedy. With 1,500 seats, it is one of the biggest theatres in London, and was designated a Grade II listed building on 1st December 1987.

Businessman John Scott and his daughter Jane founded the venue, and it was then called the “Sans Pareil” (Without Compare). John’s main idea was to showcase his daughter’s skills, and she was indeed very talented! Jane worked as a playwright, performer, and theatre manager and together they ran the theatre until Jane’s retirement in 1819.

The History of the Adelphi Theatre

Andrew Lloyd Webber is the current co-owner of the Adelphi Theatre. He bought the theatre in 1993 and renovated it before the world premiere of Sunset Boulevard, starring Patti LuPone. Subsequently, the venue also hosted the revivals of Evita (2006), Joseph And The Technicolor Dreamcoat (2007) and the World Premiere of Love Never Dies (2010).

Along with Lloyd Webber’s successful musicals, the theatre hosted  the Olivier-winning Chicago (November 1997) which became the longest-running production in its history and also the longest-running American musical on the West End. Hits at the Adelphi didn’t cease; in 2011, it hosted the highly successful One Man, Two Guvnors and later, in 2012, Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, before the hugely successful Kinky Boots took up residence_._

The musical Waitress opened at the theatre in March 2019, and was then followed by the venue’s current occupant, Back to the Future: The Musical.
