About this show

Berlin, 1930. A city alive with music, desire and possibility. The party is in full swing – but a shadow is growing at its edges. Inside the intimate and electrifying Kit Kat Club, Sally Bowles sings to forget. Cliff Bradshaw writes to remember. And the Emcee reminds us that life is beautiful… until it isn’t. Winning a record-breaking seven Olivier awards, CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB is one of the most successful musicals of all time. The story of a city, a club, and a generation dancing on the edge of history. Featuring some of the most celebrated songs in musical theatre history – including Willkommen, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, Money and the title number Cabaret – London’s Playhouse Theatre is transformed into Berlin’s legendary Kit Kat Club for an unforgettable experience that the Daily Telegraph still calls “the best show in London”. CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff – based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood.

What the critics say

The Guardian (UK)
Rebecca Frecknall’s production on the whole lives up to its hype. [Jessie Buckley] sings with astonishing command, and there is an especially breath-taking version of “Cabaret”. If this show is sold on [Eddie Redmayne's] star turn, we get more than our money’s worth with his blinding performance – in this blinder of a show.

Time Out London
But fundamentally, it’s a great production of ‘Cabaret’ that’s good enough to triumph over the myriad distractions it throws in its own path.
Andrzej LukowskiRead review
The Telegraph (UK)
“Every element of Frecknall’s production is a wow: the sumptuous pre-show entertainment...this production is, and will remain, an absolute knockout. With its combination of all-encompassing decadent beauty and thunderous moral force, there’s simply nothing else in town quite like it.”

The Telegraph (UK)
This is it. This is the one. At the end of the year, Rebecca Frecknall’s production of Cabaret – starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley – stands revealed as 2021’s kill-for-a-ticket theatrical triumph.
Dominic CavendishRead review
The London Evening Standard
Eddie Redmayne’s Emcee is a brilliantly twisted creation. [Jessie Buckley] epitomises interwar Berlin: broken and broke, dancing tipsily on the edge. Frecknall proves herself one of our most exciting directors, and she draws superb performances from all involved.

WhatsOnStage
With its starry cast and a director who has made her name rethinking classic plays, this Cabaret always promised to be the show of the season. It is that. It's also a show for our times.

The Stage (UK)
Every decision [Frecknall] makes here has clear, clever purpose. This Cabaret isn’t a radical reinterpretation, but its differences from previous productions plant themselves subtly at first, then ripple outward until they overwhelm.

The Times (UK)
Cabaret looks terrific, sounds pretty good and retains its powerful “live and let live” message. But Eddie Redmayne is not that great in it.

Theatre Bee (UK)
Cabaret’s beauty comes from implications and insinuations, undertones and overtones, rather than what is stated explicitly. Beautiful, although it can go too far – sometimes you must force yourself to see how the emcee's facial expressions, gesticulations and lyrics are a narrative about an evolving society.

The Arts Desk
All roles in the cast of 16 are characterized to perfection. Frecknall’s production will surely [warrant] several visits. This is an experience well up to the standards of the very best you’d pay a lot for at Glyndebourne or the Royal Opera.

The Kit Kat Club is the ultimate escape. After a difficult or even ordinary day, the fanfare, glitz, and glamour feel like a portal to another time, where you’ll be greeted with complimentary schnapps, dancing chorus members, and a lascivious pre-show smorgasbord.

The Independent (UK)
Redmayne is excellent. The best musical-theatre performance I have ever seen live is Buckley’s rendition of the title song. It’s a parable that still packs a punch.
