My Mother, My Father and Me
Lillian Hellman
Joe Heller's wife's one anxiety is to get daughter Louise married.
Joe's ambition is to get son Willie to work.
Then Louise announces that Charles Grant, her boyfriend, and she are engaged.
Mother is concerned whether he can support Louise on his salary - but tells the neighbors he's a banker.
The game of bluff goes on - and Charles begins to wonder what kind of family he's getting into.
Briefly, the engagement seems to be off - and then his mother appears on the scene.
She's just as big a bluffer as Mrs. Heller - and both see through all the bluffs and discount them.
