Synopsis

A prehistoric teenager has a problem: he is flunking fighting, hunting, and fishing and he faces the certain death of exile.

To impress glamorous Dorothy, he invents painting, poetry, and music all humiliating failures.

Just in time to save himself he invents the wheel and the villagers reward him with the status of manhood; it even looks as if his father will be elected mayor after all.

Dorothy is available now, but George has learned the meaning of love and chooses another.

Characters

Character
GEORGE

a dreamer and idealist in a world of fighters and hunters. A misfit and a public joke. About 17, awkward and inarticulate, sensitive, but with a head full of ideas.

JOHN THE STRONG (George's father)

George's father. About 50, burly and heavily bearded. Never goes anywhere without his club. Dreams of becoming mayor.

AGATHA (George's mother)

George's mother. About forty, a typical housewife. Gentle and mild in manner, her strength is her love for her son she doesn't understand, can be quite fierce when aroused.

MOZELLE

a sweet, child-like girl of about sixteen. She is pretty, sensible, mature, and completely unaffected in her actions. She has been following George around for years without success.

DOROTHY

the new girl in town with a good deal of Southern Belle about her. She is quite stunning, wears tight fitting skin; chic in appearance, very different from the other girls. Boy crazy and has no trouble knocking them right off their feet.

PAUL THE PROFESSOR

teacher of the local school, unattached bachelor of 25. He has a small beard, looks studious and shabby, but actually is not a typical teacher by our standards. Always carries a club.

SCARFACE

leader of the gang, most outstanding boy in school, and George's life long rival. He is seventeen, can do everything well, knows how to get along with the teacher, and makes George's life miserable.

SPEAR

Scarface's  "yes man," also seventeen, not quite so good at anything.

BEAR

Big dumb athlete. About seventeen.

RUTH

the spokesman for the girls, about fifteen, an average girl, pretty, and given to primping and giggles.

IRMA

wife of the present mayor, considers herself the town's social leader, very affected and put-on. A friend of Agatha's.

GENEVIEVE

a mouse-like shadow for Irma. Her only claim to distinction is her son, Scarface. A widow about forty.

IRVING THE GREAT NOSE

a burly, dark, bearded man; the present mayor of the village. Wears a large medallion on a chain about his neck. Overbearing and prideful.

RALPH THE FAST RUNNER

a slight, nervous, mousy, sneaky looking man, more or less Irving's henchman. He has recently moved his family to this village, and is to head the Sanitation Committee. Middle aged, bearded, and carries a club.
