Straight White Men / Untitled Feminist Show
Young Jean Lee
THE STORY: A group of middle-aged men’s lives are changed when a stranger crashes their Thursday night support group.
As they clumsily grapple with gender identities, cultural appropriation, and the loneliness of aging, their ideas of what it means to be a man are completely upended.
Set in the months following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Fairey’s play explores the confusion, comedy, and vulnerability of trying to understand one’s place in the world when the world has been forever changed.
"…a knowing, highly critical and laugh-out-loud funny work about a group of Americans in crisis: men. The remarkable thing about SUPPORT GROUP FOR MEN…is that it manages to deal with many of the more complex issues of the day—gender politics, economic duress, the #MeToo movement, even police violence and racism—while appearing understanding of, and compassionate toward, all sides.” —Chicago Tribune. “…as clever as it is gentle and poignant and authentic. …playwright Fairey’s real grasp of dialogue, dramatic tension and human frailty comes sharply into focus."
