Synopsis

Beneath the otherworldly glow of the Northern Lights, tourists and locals mingle in the shadows of Iceland’s capital city.

Told through eight interconnected vignettes, Reykjavík eavesdrops on lovers, siblings, hotel employees, sex workers – and even some birds with really strong opinions about honesty.

In this tour-de-force collision of sex and danger, playwright Yockey propels us on a thrilling journey through a world in which the supernatural is closer than we think.

Press Reviews

"[A] sexy, scary, funny play… Part of the thrill is, from scene to scene, you’re never fully prepared for what is coming next. It could be comic or violent, naturalistic or spiritual, but all the pieces fit together in a magnificently queer jigsaw puzzle."

— Dallas Voice

"A magical fever dream… a haunting and disorienting ride you won't want to miss."

— Broadway World

"[A] magic-filled and darkly comic romp through Iceland’s capital."

— DC Theatre Scene

"In playwright Steve Yockey’s dark-edged and supernatural Reykjavík, the audience eavesdrops on the knotty and tangled psycho-sexual intimacies between and among various characters, most of whom are queer… Like the northern lights that beckon people from all over the world to Iceland, there is something beautifully mesmerizing about the storm of charged particles of Reykjavík that takes place onstage. It’s well worth the trip."

— TheaterJones, North Texas

"A stunningly original world of mystery, sensuality, passion and menace… Reykjavík is a magical trip… Steve Yockey’s play is a phantasmagorical parable about the darkness that can underlie sexual and romantic relationships. Yet ultimately, just like James’ quest, it takes us on a splendiferous journey to see the light."

— DC Metro Theater Arts
