Synopsis

THE STORY: Frankie, a traditional girl from a traditional town, has been leading an untraditional life.

For over twenty years she has been Fred's girlfriend, and though she longs to be married, Fred has never asked—until now.

Why the change of heart?

Fred's mother may be dying, and she would like to see her son married before she goes.

But that's only part of the reason.

There's the other embarrassing matter of another woman, a younger woman, who is suing Fred because she claims to have quit her job after Fred proposed to her.

As if that weren't trouble enough, both Frankie and the other woman will be having Fred's child.

Press Reviews

"…a play in which history repeats itself with a touch of farce and a touch of tragedy. In many ways, this relatively gentle comedy is a defense of old-fashioned values, and a warning that even today…there are heavy consequences to pay for deviating from the traditional…a memorable member of [Foote's] impressive oeuvre."
