The Role We Need to Fill:
Professional Licensing Associate
Full-Time Hourly Position
The Professional Licensing Associate is responsible for directly handling amateur and select professional licensing in key foreign territories from MTI’s New York office. The accounts primarily consist of international schools, community theatres, and select professional organizations. Working closely with the Vice President, Professional Licensing and Vice President, Asia-Pacific Region and MTI Europe and Australasia offices, this role also supports maintenance of the company’s licensing activities in the international touring markets and contributes to departmental reporting and special projects.
Key Responsibilities:
International Licensing
• Negotiate royalties and rental agreements directly with amateur and select professional accounts not represented by subagents, in close collaboration with the Vice President, Professional Licensing and Vice President, Asia-Pacific Region. Prepare and issue contracts for amateur and select professional licensing deals.
• Enter and track royalty data for licensed theatres.
• Work, as needed, to resolve violations of licenses and pursue unlicensed productions, in coordination with the Legal department.
• Coordinate international touring activity across MTI’s offices in New York, London and Melbourne, including preparing or maintaining licenses for international tours upon request.
Database & Reporting Support
• Assist in maintaining and updating the company’s internal foreign-language translation database in coordination with the Vice President, Professional Licensing and Vice President, Asia-Pacific Region, including assisting with the evaluation of some foreign-language translations directly.
• Support the preparation of departmental data reports, including quarterly reports for key authors and rightsholders, as well as other miscellaneous reports as needed.
Interdepartmental Collaboration & Special Projects
• Collaborate with Marketing and other departments on professional licensing initiatives, including new title rollouts and promotional efforts for MTI’s catalogue.
• Participate in broader department projects and initiatives as assigned.
• Participate in the internal process of evaluating new musicals for licensing potential.
• Representing MTI at occasional professional conferences and events.
• May be asked to license symphonic concerts upon request.
• Additional administrative tasks as needed.
Skills Required:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Fluent foreign language skills (Chinese, Korean and/or Japanese preferred)
• Reliable follow-through and task management abilities, including ability to work within deadlines
• Thorough understanding of musical theatre and the licensing business
• Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills
• Basic accounting knowledge
• Detail-oriented and highly organized
• Customer service-focused with a collaborative mindset
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to learn about new markets and aspects of the industry
