Hampstead Theatre is seeking an experienced aHead of Stage to lead all stage and flying operations across our programme of productions and events on both the Main Stage and Studio.
Reporting to the Technical Director, the Head of Stage plays a central role in the delivery of Hampstead Theatre’s producing programme, working closely with Production Managers, designers, directors and visiting creative teams from early planning through rehearsals, fit‑ups, performances and get‑outs. The role combines strategic oversight with a strong hands‑on presence, ensuring all stage activity is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest professional standard. The postholder will lead and manage the Stage team, including the Deputy Head of Stage, Stage Technicians and freelance staff, overseeing recruitment, scheduling and deployment to ensure appropriate skills and staffing levels are available across productions and events. The role is responsible for planning and supervising all stage and flying activity, maintaining stage systems and associated equipment, and ensuring compliance with all relevant Health & Safety legislation and best practice. The Head of Stage will provide clear leadership and communication, supporting artists and colleagues in the realisation of ambitious and technically demanding work within a busy producing environment. This includes attending production meetings, rehearsals and technical rehearsals as required, contributing practical expertise and solutions to creative and logistical challenges. The position also has responsibility for managing allocated departmental and show budgets, supporting the Technical Director in forward planning and resource management, and ensuring accurate documentation, maintenance schedules and safety records are maintained for all stage and flying systems. This is a full‑time, permanent role based on a 38‑hour working week, Monday to Saturday, with 350 hours of planned annual overtime incorporated into the salary to reflect the predictable demands of a producing theatre.
