The Production

The first-ever theatre adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ internationally acclaimed book and Lionsgate’s motion-picture, The Hunger Games: On Stage opened at Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre in Autumn 2025, adapted by multi award-winning playwright Conor McPherson and directed by Matthew Dunster.

Job Description:

As Deputy Head of Automation, you will play a key role in supporting the Head of Automation with the specialist operation, maintenance and safe delivery of all performer flying, automated elements, and running of the department.

You'll ensure the smooth running of live performances, collaborating closely with other technical departments, creatives, and stage management to execute complex sequences with safety and reliability. You’ll play a pivotal role in delivering seamless automation across complex set changes, flying systems, and high-tech scenic elements on a large scale theatre production.

Key Responsibilities:

● Supporting the Head of Automation in overseeing the safe running, operation and maintenance of automated and mechanical elements of a technically complicated production.

● Deputising for the Head of Automation, if required.

● Assisting with the inspection, maintenance and safe operation of all department equipment, including performer flying rigging systems, associated hardware and Automation Systems including moving seating banks and lifts.

● Supporting the planning and execution of rigging requirements for rehearsals and performance, maintaining compliance with inspection schedules, manufacturer guidance and safe systems of work.

● Developing a thorough working knowledge of all plots and tracks within the department, so that you are able to provide cover for other department members during holiday or sickness, and are able to train and support other members of the team as required.

● Cross departmental collaboration with Stage Management, Wardrobe, Performers and Technical teams to safely deliver performer flying elements, particularly around understudies, swings and costume integration.

● Attending all rehearsals, show calls, maintenance calls, get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs as required by your Head of Department or company management, including emergency calls in the event of equipment failure or other incident, particularly if there is a risk of the cancellation of a performance.

Automation Responsibilities

● Supporting the Head of Automation in programming, maintaining and operating motorised stage machinery, including lifts and moving seating banks.

● Executing complex scene changes safely during live performances, ensuring all moving elements sync with creative designs while adhering to compliance standards.

● In collaboration with the Head of Automation, taking responsibility for the inspection, maintenance and safe operation of all automated equipment and associated hardware, across rehearsals and performances.

Performer Flying Responsibilities

● Supporting performer inductions and flying rehearsals, building strong working relationships with performers to ensure confidence, consistency and safe delivery of flying elements.

● Leading on harness fitting, suitability and ongoing inspection to ensure safe integration with performers and costume requirements.

● Taking a leading role in the safe execution of performer flying sequences during rehearsals and performance.

Emergency Response and Safety

● Maintaining a strong understanding of performer flying rescue procedures, and ensuring rescue equipment readiness in order to support emergency response situations involving suspended performers, equipment failures or system incidents.

● Ensuring emergency response systems for suspended performers are operational and understood by the team.

● Working within approved risk assessments, rescue plans and safe systems of work.

● Maintaining the highest standards of health and safety relating to performer flying, working at height, harness systems and rigging operations.

Training Responsibilities

● Supporting training, competency assessment and ongoing development of team members in performer flying, harness systems and rigging, ensuring they are appropriately trained before independently operating flying systems.

● Supporting training, competency assessment and ongoing development of team members in the safe operation and maintenance of all.

● Responsibility for inspection processes, pre show checks, maintenance reporting and escalation of any safety concerns or equipment defects.

Essential Criteria

● Proven and extensive experience in taking a leading role in the automation department of a large and technically complex show.

● Experience of working with automated flying and performer flying.

● Relevant supervisory experience.

● Calm under pressure with excellent problem-solving skills.

● Team leadership experience and strong interpersonal communication skills.

● A commitment to best health and safety practices.
