About this show

Following his sell-out performance of Venus and Adonis, Mark Rylance returns to the Marylebone Theatre to star in Tartuffe (Remixed), a new version of Moliere’s classic comedy, written and directed by Darren Raymond. Relocated to a Nigerian-jamaican household in modern England, Tartuffe (Remixed) is a deliciously biting comedy in rhyming couplets, which brings both new humour and modern pathos to the original text. The outspoken Afolabi–Williams family gathers at Oga Afolabi's mansion as preparations begin for the wedding of his daughter. With relatives arriving from far and wide, family traditions are in full swing, emotions are running high, and opinions are never in short supply. But when Tartuffe, a charismatic man of God who has won Oga's unwavering trust, takes up residence in the family home, old wounds reopen, loyalties are tested, and faith itself becomes a battleground. As the wedding day draws ever closer, the family must expose the truth before everything they hold dear is torn apart. Bold, hilarious and heartfelt, Tartuffe (Remixed) reimagines Molière's timeless comedy through the lens of a contemporary Nigerian–Jamaican family. Blending razor-sharp comedy, spoken word, music and beautifully crafted rhyming verse, this vibrant new adaptation is a joyful celebration of faith, family, forgiveness and the courage to speak truth to power ‍

The theatre’s inaugural season included A Sherlock Carol (which has returned to the theatre for every festive season since) and The Dry House by Eugene O’Hare. The theatre hosts a  variety of concerts and off-Broadway transfers, and has established a pattern of quality and ambition that continues to define its programming today.
