Breakdown
I HOPE THIS LETTER REACHES MICTLAN
SEEKING:
SARAI (SARA-E): mid-20s - Mexican - A twin sister in denial, guilt, passionate about changing the outcome of things, a control freak, a shaman once a DREAMer who unlike her brother has become a naturalized American through an Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) after being assaulted by a caretaker.
SAUL (SA-UL): mid-20s - Mexican - A twin brother, a DREAMer, stubborn but full of fight. Just a boy with a broken heart. He wants to desperately love and be loved.
ARIEL: late 20s - third generation Irish-American -Sarai’s significant other, the factory manager, he comes from a working-class family who has made a name for themselves. He's compassionate but afraid he's not enough for Sarai.
RUBEE: mid-20s - an African immigrant, brought over in her early teens, Saul's love interest, factory worker, in love, jaded, under parental pressure. Works in the daytime as a home attendant and at night as a factory worker.
JAQUELINE: mid-20s - a first-generation Dominican-American from Washington Heights with big dreams, determined to make her family proud. Doubles as MICTECACIHUATL
NOOR/FERNANDO: mid 20s - BIPOC - racially ambiguous, both minor male roles played by the same actor, both different in values, constantly stirring the pot. Ambitious.
XAVI (CHAA-VEE): mid 20s - Latiné - Saul’s guide in Mictlān, once a pit bull terrier previously known as Porfirio, named after Mexican president Porfirio Diaz. Xavi is a jokester in nature; he reminds you of that one primo who was once in a gang and had low riders and teases/pranks everyone in the family gatherings. He died during a hit and run.
MICTECACIHUATL (meek-TEH-kah-see-WAH-tl): The Goddess of Death—is never actually seen but present through her silhouette and the sound of her voice that can bring chills and warmth. Doubles as JAQUELINE.
