The action takes place in the Red Owl Tavern - a hostelry where three years previous three mysterious murders had taken place.
A party consisting of Richard Halstead, the well-known author of mystery stories, and Sandock, the famous detective, arrive to solve the mystery.
Halstead is immediately knocked on the head by a member of the notorious dope gang.
The Scarlet Scarabs, while Sandock is murdered shortly after.
