The New Englanders
Jeff Augustin
What does it mean to be a father?
What does it mean to be a son?
And does retracing the steps of those that come before us help us learn who they were?
Son Jonah decides to embark on the same road trip – just in reverse – that his father, Jean, and pregnant mother did before he was born.
As father and son confide their hopes, fears and anguish with the audience, a small band of musicians helps reveal their innermost feelings with beautifully raw music – stirring their spirits out of complacency, finding new answers by looking to the past and comfort in their shared and separate identity.
"[The Bengsons’] spare, soulful songs frame and enliven the actors’ alternating monologues…"
— The New Yorker
"Simple and heartfelt, Where the Mountain Meets the Sea is likely to resonate deeply with some audience members…I could feel this play’s expression of grief and regret in my bones…it’s easy to get lost in the music and mystery."
— TheaterMania
"Augustin has a gift for building character through storytelling and poetic turns of phrase that feel natural and not just writerly."
— The Wrap
