Synopsis

As a foreign war correspondent, Marina has put her life on the line to illuminate the darkest corners of humanity.

Having just returned from a particularly bloody conflict, she flirts with staying home for good – alongside her cameraman turned lover.

With her closest friends and family gathered on the eve of her lifetime achievement award ceremony, she decides to cap this glorious moment with an elopement.

But as Marina tries to take hold of her life, she’s forced to reckon with the grip that war has held on her.

Press Reviews

"Viscerally effective… there’s a core human story here – about the choices, risks, and sacrifices that go into making up a meaningful life, and who pays the cost of one person’s choices – and there’s a core debate of ideas, too – about the function and purpose of journalism in the 21st century."

— Exeunt NYC

"[An] ode to war correspondents who risk their lives to tell the general public about the horrors in conflict zones… [the play] has a lot of interesting things on its mind, mostly about mothers who are single-minded in their ambition and their children who are left abandoned in their absence."

— Theatermania

"Shrapnel-sharp dialogue… Scheer embeds the action with all sorts of explosive dramatic devices… Scheer also stages some lively debates… and, bringing the action right up to the minute, the characters seriously discuss the possibility of a US civil war."

— Lighting & Sound America

"Scheer does open an intriguing line of inquiry, as Marina, accepting her award, questions the values behind a model of journalism that valorizes danger to journalists."

— The New York Times

"Ambitiously weaves tonal disparities among the plot threads, and these draw attention to the apparent psychic disconnects Marina encounters."

— Talkin’ Broadway
