Synopsis

Roger Courtland is fed up with what he calls the major ills of modern civilizationregimentation, high living costs, and taxation.

When he finds among a Revolutionary forebear's effects a Congressional land grant giving him complete dominion over his ancestral estate on Long Island, Roger secedes from the Union!

Which is all very well for Roger, but embarrassing to people who can no longer use the state highway which Roger has blocked off pending recognition of the Free State of Courtland by the United States government.

With his wife, Martha, son Chip, daughter Susan, and her boy friend, Bill Townsend, Roger successfully maintains his frontier against everyone.

But then the U.S. cuts off the Free State from the outside world.

How Roger fights back, how Susan and Bill pursue their romance under these trying circumstances, how Roger finally snatches victory from defeat, forms a riotous yet thought-provoking comedy.
