Synopsis

Letitia is companion to difficult and wealthy Miss Matfield.

Outwardly resigned to the lot so common for the genteel poor of the time.

Letitia is really longing to break away.

When Harry Vincent arrives, to see if he can persuade the 'lady of the house' to sell some of her precious china, she is easily won over by him, and of her own accord appropriates Miss Matfield's best pieces, hoping to pay her before the purloining is discovered.

Miss Matfield, however, finds out and only a heart attack prevents Letitia from disaster.

At the same time, Letitia hears that Harry has disappeared.

Miss Matfield's will, however, contains a surprise which sets Letitia on the road to becoming a second Miss Matfield herself.
