Graceland
Ellen Fairey
THE STORIES: GRACELAND.
The place is the front entrance of Graceland, the late Elvis Presley's Memphis mansion, the time, five o'clock in the morning, three days before the estate is to be opened to the public.
Two ardent Presley fans, Bev and Root
"As the two women discuss the depth of their devotion to Elvis, they slowly reveal the sad and funny sides of their lives. By the end of the play, their competition has dissolved into a touching reconciliation."
— Philadelphia Courier-Post
"It disturbs both intentionally and unintentionally."
— Philadelphia Inquirer
Character
---
BEV DAVIES 42, from Wilmington, DE. Strong-willed and opinionated but also very generous and open. Very careful about her appearance, sticking closely to matching polyester ensembles and ornate wigs, a la Dolly Parton. She is completely dedicated to Elvis Presley and expects nothing less from those around her. She has at least a 20-pound weight problem, not helped by her love of junk food.
ROOTIE MALLERT 22, from a tiny town outside Lafayette, LA, in Cajun country. She has a frail build and is extremely thin, with an almost child-like body. From a distance, she could pass for 13. She is uneducated and extremely simple, naive and unworldly. She could almost be mistaken for being somewhat slow-witted, but she isn’t. Her lack of education and experience have made her very innocent and trusting. Having grown up surrounded by men, she is unsure of how to act with women, but wants very much to be liked.
ROOTIE DEJAUN 13, timid, shy, frailly build. Doesn’t have friends, spends most of her time with her brother Beau, whom she idolizes. Not comfortable with other people. Self-conscious, insecure, awkward. She lives for her brother, who can bring out her fun, giggly, even slightly tough side.
BEAU DEJAUN 30, very handsome, a dreamer and tale-spinner. Sensitive, gentle, and like his sister, not very comfortable with those outside his family or even his own much wilder brothers. He is charming and romantic and at times seems wise beyond his years while at other times, seems like one of Peter Pan’s lost boys.
