The Chinese Emperor acquires a nightingale and places it in a golden cage.
Then he receives a mechanical nightingale and it replaces the live one in his affection.
When the Emperor falls deathly ill, the mechanical bird breaks down.
The real bird appears at his window and sings so sweetly that Death is vanquished.
