Ready for the River
Neal Bell
Did J.D.'s wife and children really perish in a hurricane while they were vacationing in Florida?
Or has there been some horrible confusion?
The newspapers report their deaths but J.D. receives a telegram from his wife saying they are having a wonderful time.
As J.D.,who had wanted desperately to be rid of his family for a while, tries to find out whether they are dead or alive, we experience fear, frustration and then horror.
With J.D., we begin to realize that whether his family is dead or alive, he has become spiritually, perhaps irrevocably, isolated from them.
