His obsessive quest to find those who killed his grandmother leads to entanglements, some humorous, with bureaucrats and with resistant sons and daughters.

Peter tries to rise above the darkness of his interrogations by searching for someone with whom he might bridge the gulf of hatred and distrust.

That search leads him to a woman caught between loyalty to her father and love for her teenage son who has discovered that her father stole their house from a Jewish family that died at Auschwitz Birkenau.
