Breakdown

DELUSION

SEEKING:

KAYDEN - character portrayed as female, 18+ to play younger, any ethnicity. Tracy's daughter. A quietly magnetic teenager. Thoughtful, intelligent, and observant, she uses card tricks the way other kids use social media, as a way to be seen on her own terms. She was bullied in middle school and carries a history of self-harm and a suicide attempt that she has genuinely moved through. She is socially awkward but has found her confidence in magic. The spine of the play is her magic show. DESIRABLE SKILLS: the ability to learn and perform magic tricks (card tricks, sleight of hand and other tricks as required). Magic training will be provided. A basic understanding and appreciation of the craft along with a lot of practice will be necessary. MUST HAVE STRONG THEATER TRAINING. EXPERIENCE WITH NEW WORK DEVELOPMENT A PLUS.

TRACY - character portrayed as female, 50s, any ethnicity. Kayden's mother. A journeyman working actor who is in denial about the state of her career. A recent divorcee and diligent mother, Tracy is pragmatic in her approach to life. She loves her daughter with a ferocity that sometimes tips into control, and she knows it. Sharp, funny, self-aware, and capable of spectacular rage, she has the ability to make a woman who throws a Kind Bar across a room completely sympathetic. DESIRABLE SKILLS: the ability to support the execution of various magic tricks that occur in the play. Magic training will be provided. A basic understanding and appreciation of the craft is helpful. MUST HAVE STRONG THEATER TRAINING. EXPERIENCE WITH NEW WORK DEVELOPMENT A PLUS.

QUINN - character portrayed as female, 18+ to play younger, any ethnicity. Brooke's daughter. Charismatic, performative, and genuinely cruel in ways she doesn't fully understand yet. She is incredibly popular, rebellious and social media savvy with ruthless mean girl tendencies. She is not a villain, she is a teenager who has been taught that self-preservation is the highest virtue. Like her mother, she values her physical appeal. Kayden and Quinn were best friends until middle school. MUST HAVE STRONG THEATER TRAINING. EXPERIENCE WITH NEW WORK DEVELOPMENT A PLUS.

BROOKE - character portrayed as female, 50s, any ethnicity. Quinn's mother. An ex-model who divorced well. Brooke is self-serving in ways she has beautifully rationalized as spiritual. She drinks vegan wine, communes with ghosts, and will protect her daughter by any means necessary, all while believing she is a force for good. She is a yoga teacher and wellness practitioner who thrives on one-upmanship. MUST HAVE STRONG THEATER TRAINING. EXPERIENCE WITH NEW WORK DEVELOPMENT A PLUS.
