Awards: The Kleban Award for Librettist; finalist for the Fred Ebb Foundation Award in Songwriting 2005, 2006, and 2008. Winner of the Global Search for New Musicals, Cardiff, Wales, 2005. Works include FROG KISS, which was selected for the 2010 New York Musical Theatre Festival; SWIMMING AT THE RITZ, which toured the U.K. in 2011; the Northeast premiere of ENCHANTED APRIL, a musical adapted from the 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim with a score by Richard B. Evans, June 2011; a Broadway debut with the original musical LADY ON THE CAROUSEL, Chase Mishkin, producer, William Goldstein, composer; the original animated musical feature "Jazzland," with a score by Eric Scott Reed. His adaptation of Helene Hanff’s comic memoir, "Underfoot in Show Business" received its world premiere at the Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne, U.K., May 2008, directed by award-winning BBC director David Giles. Other musicals: THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING, ESPRESSO TRASHO, THE SHOWGIRL OF 52ND STREET, THE DOCTOR’S WIFE, TIMES SQ. KISS. Charles is a former Fellow of the Edward F. Albee Foundation and a recipient of a regional Emmy for THE UNDEFEATED RHUMBA CHAMP. His work is published by Dramatists Play Service and Applause Theatre Books of New York. A native of Chicago, a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Speech, Charles lives and writes in New York City, and is a member of the Dramatist's Guild.
