Rehearsals begin August 17 - 2x a week until tech

Tech: Monday 9/28 11am-5pm, Thursday 10/1 - 1:30pm-5pm, Friday 10/2- 1pm-5pm

Performances: Sun October 4th @ 7pm, Sun October 11th @ 3pm & 7pm, Fri October 16th @ 9:30pm, & Sat October 17th @ 3pm

ABOUT THE PLAY: Domov is a story about a young Slovak-American woman who journeys to reconnect with her past, discovering old and new friends who help piece together her fractured identity. It’s a story of ancestry, Slovak culture, family relationships, and reclaiming something that was lost, while also reflecting the experience of immigrant children that have lost touch with their parents’ home country, family, and culture.

Note: There is some Slovak dialogue throughout the script, and we are particularly interested in actors who can use a Slovak/Western Slavic (Czech, Polish, Slovak, etc) accent when speaking English.

Characters (in order of appearance):

ANA: 25 years old, femme. A Slovak-American. Hardworking, introvert-leaning, right in the middle of a quarter-life crisis (and refuses to acknowledge it).

GENESIS: 25 years old, femme. Ana’s best friend from college, best tea-spiller around, the sun in any crowded room.

JANKA: 24-26 years old, femme. Ana’s cousin. She and Ana were thick as thieves in childhood, but now she is a mystery. Played by the same actor who plays GENESIS.

MAMA: 45-55 years old, femme. Ana’s mother Ivana, a Slovak immigrant, an empty-nester and living her best life.

ĽUDOVÍŤ ŠTÚR: 40 years old, masc. A spiritual guide that appears in Ana’s dream, the ghost of a real Slovak historical figure from the mid-1800’s, and on a mission to save Slovak-ness.

LUKÁŠ: 25-27 years old, masc. Genesis’s coworker, from Slovakia on a work visa, tends to float around..

BABKA: 65+ years old, femme. Ana’s grandmother, traditional, practical, and Slavic as hell.

JANKA’S FIANCÉ: 24-26 years old. Non-speaking role. Played by the same actor who plays ĽUDOVÍŤ ŠTÚR.

JÁNOŠÍK: 25 years old, masc. A strong moral compass, a bit reckless, and quite charming. Also the ghost of a real Slovak folk hero from the early 1700’s, their own Robin Hood. Played by the same actor who plays ĽUDOVÍŤ ŠTÚR.

MÁRIA: Could by 30, could be 80, femme. An ancient spirit, all knowing and understanding. Played by the same actor who plays BABKA.
