PROJECT:

FloorPlay: A Ballroom Dance Musical

FloorPlay is a vibrant, high-stakes musical that explores #MeToo situations, body image, power dynamics, and self-worth through the lens of competitive dance.

SEEKING:

Melinda – 18–25, ballet-trained dancer, mezzo/soprano. Ballroom training is a plus.

After Melinda is body-shamed by a ballet director, she attempts International Latin. She transforms herself from a white swan to sex bomb, but must confront what price she’s willing to pay to win.

Marc – 20s–30s, any ethnicity, Latin dancer, tenor/baritenor. Ballroom training is preferred.

Warm, genuine, and charismatic. Respects the lead character Melinda’s talent and supports her growth. Represents honest partnership. Their chemistry blossoms on the dance floor.

Dmitri – 20s–30s, Latin champion, baritone. Ballroom training is preferred.

Seductive, ambitious, and manipulative. Sees Melinda (the lead character) as a tool to win and exerts power over partners. His coercive behavior creates a #MeToo turning point for Melinda.

Xavier – 40s, any ethnicity, charismatic Latin coach, baritone/tenor. Ballroom training is preferred.

Former ballroom champion, now ousted from his studio. Brilliant, blunt, and flamboyant, he trains Melinda, the lead character, at a pole club, using the pole as her first partner. He champions authenticity over conformity, urging Melinda to embrace the uniqueness he once hid before coming out.

Jacquelyn – 40- 60s, any ethnicity, studio owner/manager, mezzo/belter. Some dance training needed.

She’s a cougar who is in love with Dmitri. Big number in the second act- think Hello Dolly.

Richard Ascott III – 40s, any ethnicity, baritone/character role.

The former rival of one of the male leads, and a crooked judge/coach who openly trades votes for money and favors. British accent is required – think King George in Hamilton.
