SEEKING:

NARRATOR (30s-60s)

No specific nationality. A dynamic storyteller who opens the play and guides the audience through Jacob Marley's story. The Narrator sets each scene, explains what is happening in the afterlife and in London, and moves the story forward between scenes. Narrator is friendly and direct with the audience and has a dry sense of humor. Narrator doubles as the other characters as the story needs them, including Marley, Scrooge, the Bogle, and the Record Keeper, so the play is told by one person.

JACOB MARLEY (he/him, 40s–60s)

British. Awful. A sour, proud, lonely, angry old pill. Dead these seven years and bound in chains forged link by link from a lifetime of greed, Marley is given one impossible night to redeem Ebenezer Scrooge before his own fate is sealed for good.

RECORD KEEPER (he/him, 60s-70s)

The elderly, fussy bureaucrat of the afterlife, who keeps the files on souls like Marley's and represents fate itself. He explains the rules of Marley's second chance and what is at stake if he fails. He is dry, rule-bound, and hard to argue with.

THE BOGLE (he/him, any age)

A small demon. He's mean enough. Lots of energy; enjoys his work, assigned to guide Marley through his task. He is playful, quick with a joke, and works as Marley's guide and sidekick. He gives the story much of its humor and gets Marley moving when he stalls.
