Casting Actors for The Crowns of Avalon

Casting a staged live production of a pilot for "The Crowns of Avalon," a queer reimagining of Arthurian myth in which two girls from 1940s Los Angeles find themselves suddenly and violently thrust into a dying Camelot. This pilot will be performed live to a ticketed audience, and a pro-shot will be produced as marketing/publicity for fundraising events to bring our television show to life in the near future.

Content Warning: Depiction of a hate crime. Sexual assault. Racism, xenophobia, and homophobia.

Important: Applicants must be local to the Los Angeles/Orange County area and must be 18 and older. This is a volunteer independent production with according agreements based on role classification (cast or crew).

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

Rehearsals begin Sunday, 7/26 with a table read. Rehearsals will run from 7/26- 9/3, with shows on 9/4, 9/5, 9/6, 9/11, 9/12, and 9/13.

The rehearsal schedule is as follows:

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8:00pm-11:00pm

Sundays: 10:00am-3:00pm, with a 30 minute break at 12:30 for lunch

TECH WEEK runs from 8/31-9/3. Actors are required to be present for tech week.

CASTING DESCRIPTION

Adelaide Huntingdale (20-25): Accent required: RP. Adelaide is stubborn, fiery, and rebellious to a fault, though behind her prickly exterior lies a longing for love, acceptance, and a wonder for the world around her. Despite being functionally abandoned by her (admittedly quite wealthy) family to a life of misery in the United States, Adelaide continues forward. She sees no point in life’s mundanities and finds solace only in her music and her friendship with Mirabel.

Mirabel Reyes (20-25): Language required: Spanish. Mirabel has all the makings of a good, Catholic girl. She is outwardly quiet and good-natured, though she has a hidden mischievous side. She is quite family-oriented, and incredibly close with her older brother and father. Appearances are very important to Mirabel, and she takes great pains to make sure that she appears every bit the perfect girl, trying her best to assimilate into white society.

Percival (25-30), Accent required: Northern or RP: Percival is first and foremost bound by duty. He has remained in Camelot for the centuries in which he has ruled dutifully as the steward until Arthur’s inevitable return. He blames himself for the death of Arthur and subsequent death of Merlin, but believes wholeheartedly that Camelot can be returned to its former glory. He will do nearly anything to right his former wrongs, sometimes going to extremes.

Lancelot (25-30): Lancelot first lived as an immigrant in the US, dying in WWI. He now takes up the moniker of Lancelot and does not speak of his former life. Lancelot is not quite so positive about Camelot as Percival, though he sees it as his duty to lead his men to a better life. He views his own life as all but sacrificed, and frequently engages in reckless behaviour. He cares deeply for his friends and brothers-in-arms and would willingly sacrifice their dying homeland for their happiness.

Gawain (20-25) Accent required: Irish or Northern Irish: Similarly to Percival, Gawain views Camelot through very rose-coloured glasses, believing the restoration of Camelot to be his one true duty. He takes great glee in pranks and practical jokes, though he has learned over the years that others are not as receptive. He spent his previous life as a pirate and has a fondness for the sea, to which he would like to return when, and if, he dies.

Mordred (50-60) Accent required: RP: Mordred has spent the past several hundred years attempting to overthrow Camelot, slowly, methodically, and through precise propaganda. He siphons away at the last magic that Merlin used to protect Camelot, and uses it for his own nefarious purposes. He is charming, charismatic, and extraordinarily calculated.

Bedivere (35-40) Accent required: RP, regional English, or Welsh accent : Bedivere spent most of his days in the tavern before his return to Camelot. Of all the knights, Bedivere is the only one whose life in Camelot plagued him in the rest of his lives. He views his return to Camelot as a redemption and a way to start over. His skills as a sword-smith, honed over his decades since his return, make him invaluable to the team.

Agravain (25-30) Accent required: RP or regional English accent: Agravain died penniless on the streets. He was a poet, and not a very good one. He enjoys finding community among the knights, though does struggle to connect to a few of them. He enjoys walking by himself through the forests and has taken to birdwatching.

Galahad (18-21) Accent required: RP, Regional English, or Irish: Galahad enjoys life about as much as the next lad. He isn’t thinking too far ahead. He is quite good friends with Agravain, and the two of them struggle to live up to their former glory.

Dinadan (25-30) Accent required: Scottish: Dinadan thinks he’s funny. He tries very hard to be. He is instead rather bumbling and awkward, though well meaning. He bonds with others by relentlessly mocking them.

Squire (20-25): The squire was born during the aftermath of Camelot’s slow and steady decline. He has not known it in it’s full glory.

Marcello (50-60): Marcello and his wife immigrated from Michoacán in 1919. He works incredibly hard to give his children a good education. He loves Mirabel with all his heart, and spoils her all he can. He is currently recovering from a heart attack.

Cesar Augusto (25-30): Mirabel’s brother. He is nothing if not a jokester. He tried to protect his younger sisters from the harsh realities of the world through humour. He works as a mechanic and is part of a mariachi band. He enrolled in the navy to help support his family after his father’s heart attack.

Alma Reyes (7-10): Alma is Mirabel’s baby sister. She reads at a 6th grade level and is very proud of it. She idolises her sister and likes to steal her lipstick.

Sister Carmichael (45-50): Sister Carmichael does not like it when things are out of place. She does not like it when people stray from the rules. She will tolerate it, given reasonable explanation, but she would much rather it not happen at all. She is very strict on the morality clause at her school.

Father Sinclair (60s): The Priest. (Required: some knowledge of Latin)

Professor Murphy (45-50): A dour and grumpy man, Professor Murphy does not like much of anything at all. He is a brilliant man, though not a brilliant teacher.

Dean (20-25): Dean grew up in a suburb of LA. He was raised extremely Catholic. He believes in segregation and believes that homosexuality is a sin.

Billy (20-25): Billy has been friends with Dean since high school. He generally goes along with whatever Dead says.

Maxwell (20-25): Maxwell used to kill bugs by pulling their legs off. Sometimes he wonders what would happen if he did that to a bird.

Radio Host (Audio Only): Accent required: Transatlantic or standard American

The Lady of the Lake (Audio Only): Accent required: RP

Non-speaking roles:
Arthur (20-25): Arthur is noble, righteous and strong. He exists solely in the past. Though he does not speak, he is present in several flashbacks


Morgana (20-25): Morgana serves as the main temptation, dragging Mirabel away from safety and towards danger.
