Breakdown

THE GRAND DELUSION

Project Description: A modern-day fairy tale, THE GRAND DELUSION is an original musical set in contemporary New York City, contemporary India, and a magical, mythical plane where the impossible can happen. At its heart is the quintessential love triangle. It tells the story of two best friends in New York City, Ben and Nanda, and their passionate erotic love for the same woman, Maya.

SEEKING:

BENJAMIN: Ben is a student of Eastern philosophy and religions at Columbia University, NYC. Ben is all intellect: a genius for ideas and all awkwardness when it comes to the physical world. In other words he is a mess when it comes to women. Physically, he is thin with huge dark eyes full of yearning and compassion. He is in his late twenties. TENOR

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE CAST:

Nanda- (THIS ROLE IS CAST) Nanda, on the other hand, is Ben's opposite. He is a Trinidadian-American, of East Indian and African ancestry. Skilled in the martial arts, he is sexy, athletic, charismatic and irresistible to women. Though he is not academically inclined, he has natural wisdom and is at ease in his body. And a lot of fun. Early Twenties.

Maya- (THIS ROLE IS CAST) Maya, a young and beautiful woman, newly arrived from Southern India. She is an exquisite classical dancer and expresses herself more through movement and song than words. There are many layers to her as she has a dark past she needs to hide. She can be refined but also quite acerbic, ironic and passionate. Much happens behind her eyes. Early Twenties.

Shakti- (THIS ROLE IS CAST) The tale is narrated from time to time by the Goddess, Shakti, appearing in varied incarnations which balance her formidable powers to create, destroy and delude. She can be angry and compassionate, demonic as well as comically earthy, transforming throughout the musical into numerous female forms. Her voice, in both dialogue and song, is sarcastic and mystical and at times she will wildly control and change the course of destiny with taunting pleasure.
