Breakdown

TANK STRANGER

SEEKING:

[TANK STRANGER] Man; 18 to 19 years old; Black. Raised by his great-aunts after his mother disappeared. Smart, kind, funny, and deeply loved, Tank is standing at the threshold between childhood and adulthood. He longs for independence but carries an inherited spiritual sensitivity he barely understands. Beneath his easygoing charm is a profound loneliness and curiosity about his absent mother. As the play unfolds, Tank becomes a living bridge between generations, carrying the voices, memories, and unfinished business of his ancestors.

[VONN STRANGER] Woman; 39 to 40 years old; Black. Warm-hearted, intuitive, and deeply connected to ancestral traditions. Vonn practices root work and maintains a living relationship with the spirits of her family line. She balances humor, wisdom, and vulnerability, often serving as the emotional center of the household. Though she embraces the supernatural, she is still surprised by its power. Vonn carries old grief with grace and possesses an enduring faith in love, family, and healing.

[JOSEPHINE "SEPHINE" STRANGER] Woman; 40 to 45 years old; Black. Practical, protective, and fiercely devoted. Sephine has spent her life caring for others, often at the expense of herself. Skeptical of the family's spiritual gifts, she prefers certainty over mystery and responsibility over dreams. Beneath her sharp tongue and stubborn exterior lies a woman burdened by sacrifice, loss, and unresolved hurt. Her journey is one of learning to release control and reconnect with joy.

[DOVIE STRANGER] Woman; 45 to 50 years old; Black. Tank's mother, a wanderer, mystic, and reluctant medium, left home years ago after being overwhelmed by her ability to communicate with the dead. Dovie possesses a natural charm and restless spirit that make her both irresistible and frustrating. Though she fled her family, she never stopped loving them. Returning home forces her to confront the consequences of her absence and the son she barely knows.
