Gallery Players, Brooklyn's premiere Off­-Off Broadway theater in its 60th season, announces auditions for upcoming, non-equity, production of Fun Home; Music by Jeanine Tesori; Book and Lyrics by Lisa Kron; Based on the Graphic Novel by Alison Bechdel; Director/Choreographer Barrie Gelles; Producer Noel MacDuffie/ Gallery Players

Video submission must be received by Sunday, October 18th - instructions are detailed below and at galleryplayers.com.

Rehearsals begin Monday, November 30th, evenings and weekends (with days off for the holidays). Runs January 15, 2027 ­through January 24, 2027, Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2pm & 7:30pm, and Sundays at 3pm. All auditions, rehearsals, and performances at Gallery Players, 199 14th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

Seeking 12 Cast Members
Please note the licensing materials specifically state: “The authors have authorized licensees the opportunity to cast people of all ethnicities and races in any and all roles.”
Performers of all races and ethnicities, all genders and gender expressions, all cultural heritages/backgrounds, all body types as well as disabled and non-disabled performers are encouraged to submit. We are seeking an inclusive, diverse cast.

Actors should submit video(s) of the following:
16 bars of a musical theatre song in the style of the show - the music is lush and demands precision and musicality;a comedic or tragicomic monologue, no longer than one minute.
The video(s), along with the online audition form, must be submitted by Sunday, October 18th to be considered. Please visit the “audition” section of galleryplayers.com to fill out the audition form and submit your video.

Callbacks will be held, in person, at the theater on Saturday, November 7th and/or Sunday, November 8th. Script sides and other requirements will be sent via email as necessary. Dance/movement auditions will take place at callbacks as well.

There is a one-time stipend of $100.

Character Breakdown for Fun Home

ALISON – character age is 43 years old, a cartoonist (vocal range: E3-D5)
Alison is a graphic novelist working on her next project, a personal memoir about her childhood and her relationship with her father. Her need to craft a narrative and her artistic process is what shapes the story of the musical. Alison is a lesbian and her personal aesthetic is masc of center.

MEDIUM ALISON * – character age is 19 years old (vocal range:: G3-E5)
A college freshman at Oberlin, eager to become her own person living away from home for the first time. She finds independence, embraces her queerness, and meets her first girlfriend. She delves into her art, self discovery, and creates a personal aesthetic that is slightly more refined than her childhood tomboy tendencies.
This role requires onstage, consensual intimacy with the character Joan. There is an intimacy director on the production staff.

SMALL ALISON – actor age range 11 - 13 / character age around 9-13 years old throughout the story/ (vocal range: A3-E5); this role will be double cast
Not quite a little kid, not quite a teen, “Small Alison” is growing up in the 1970s and trying to make sense of her family and their atypical home. She knows what she likes, prefers her tomboy clothing to anything frilly, and is developing an interest in drawing.

BRUCE BECHDEL – Alison’s father; character age range 35- 44 throughout the story; (vocal range:: A2-G4)
He is an erudite man who finds pleasure in great works of literature, antiques, and historic home renovations - those are his passions. His occupations are high school English teacher and the director of a funeral home. Bruce is guarded about his sexuality and lives his public life as a married, heterosexual man.
The role has intimate conversations and staging with the characters Roy and Mark, some of which is non-consensual within the story. There is an intimacy director on the production staff. The role also includes a stylized depiction of suicide.

HELEN BECHDEL – Alison’s mother; character age range approximately 35-45 throughout the story; (vocal range: A3-E5)
She is a talented and intelligent woman who had trained as an actor and pianist, studying in New York before getting married. She now teaches high school English and sometimes acts in community theatre. Helen tries to keep the house and family in order, sometimes avoiding issues in order to keep the peace.

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Alison’s slightly older brother; actor age range 11-13 years old; (vocal range: C#4-D5); this role will be double cast
The eldest brother in the family but very close in age to Alison. This character only appears in childhood memories. He is a kid growing up in the 1970s.


JOHN BECHDEL – Alison’s younger brother; actor age range 10-11 years old; (vocal range: C#4-E5); this role will be double cast
The youngest brother in the family, and a few years younger than his siblings. This character only appears in childhood memories. He is a kid growing up in the 1970s.

ROY/ MARK/ PETE/ BOBBY JEREMY - The roles of Roy, Mark, Pete, and Bobby Jeremy are performed by the same actor; characters ages range from 17-30 (vocal range: G3-A4 (opt. D#5))
Roy – A young man Bruce hires to do yard work
Mark – A high school junior
Pete – A mourner who visits the funeral home
Bobby Jeremy – Imaginary television character who sings a musical number
The role requires intimate conversations and staging with the character Bruce, some of which is non-consensual within the story. There is an intimacy director on the production staff.


JOAN * – A college student; character age is between 19-21; (vocal range: G3-G4)
She is an out and proud lesbian who is a key figure in the college’s queer community. Joan’s charm comes from her dry humor and intelligence. She is more mature than Alison, but is welcoming and supportive of Alison and never patronizing.
This role requires onstage, consensual intimacy with the character Medium Alison. There is an intimacy director on the production staff.
