The Brooklyn Heights Players is an established community theater located at 26 Willow Place in the heart of Brooklyn Heights, New York, holding open auditions for their NON-UNION fall production of "The Boys in the Band."

SYNOPSIS:
One birthday party. Nine men. A night that will change everything. A groundbreaking play that explores friendship, identity, and the struggles of gay men in the late 1960s. Premiering off-Broadway in 1968, this iconic play remains relevant today. Set in New York City, the story unfolds in Michael's apartment, where he hosts a birthday party for his friend Harold. As the evening progresses, a diverse group of gay friends reveals hidden desires and unresolved conflicts, highlighting the complexities of their individual journeys. Crowley's fearless script examines self-acceptance, internalized homophobia, and the quest for genuine connections in a prejudiced society. Through sharp dialogue, raw honesty, and moments of heartbreak and humor, The Boys in the Band offers a vivid portrait of gay men's challenges during a pivotal time in LGBTQ+ history. 2019 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
PRODUCTION SCHEDULE:
The official rehearsal schedule will be determined based on actors' conflicts. This production will rehearse predominantly on weekday evenings from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. and select Sundays from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at The Brooklyn Heights Players.
Tech rehearsals for this production are scheduled for Sunday, November 1st, and the evenings of Monday, November 2nd - Thursday, November 5th.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Michael
a thirty-year-old gay man burdened with guilt and struggling with self-acceptance. He seeks to escape his reality through impersonations of iconic female screen stars from the past. His only attempt at a writing career resulted in a sold but unproduced screenplay, leaving him without a steady income and constantly evading creditors.
Donald
a twenty-eight-year-old gay man who sees his life as less successful than he imagined, and he is committed to therapy. Intelligent and a passionate reader. (comfortable in just a towel)
Emory
a thirty-three-year-old gay man who is a flamboyant, effeminate interior decorator, and known for his humor and campy demeanor. He is often the joker of the group, playfully referring to himself and others as "girls" or "Mary."
Hank
a thirty-two-year-old bisexual man leaning more toward gay. He is a math teacher in remarkable physical condition. He has left his wife and children to pursue a relationship with Larry, whom he loves deeply.
Larry
a twenty-nine-year-old gay commercial artist, is described by his strong sexual appetite and his difficulties with monogamy. His jealousy becomes evident when Alan shows interest in Hank, yet Larry continues to flirt with Donald.
Bernard
a gay black man in his 30s who’s working in a library's circulation department, facing prejudice due to both his race and his sexuality. Despite these challenges, he feels more fortunate than the flagrantly effeminate Emory, allowing Emory to needle him because of their friendship.
Alan McCarthy
a thirty-year-old lawyer with a wife and two daughters, embodies the heteronormative ideal. Unaware of Michael’s homosexuality from their college days, he arrives at the party unexpectedly, finding himself amidst a group of gay men, feeling uneasy and out of place. He may be troubled by his own repressed homosexual inclinations, particularly in his interactions with Hank.
Cowboy
a young and vacuous twenty-two-year-old gay hustler clad as a cowboy, epitomizing the superficial side of beauty.
Harold
a thirty-two-year-old gay Jewish man preoccupied with his lack of attractiveness and aging. At thirty-two, his birthday serves as the party's occasion. He copes with depression through drug use and keeps a stash of pills for potential suicide before he grows old.
