Synopsis

Three Edwardian couples in the West Riding town of Clecklewyke gather to celebrate their silver wedding anniversaries with "high tea".

The Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitts have all prospered since they were married in a joint ceremony at the noncomformist chapel of which they are now leading members.

What a to-do when they learn that the young minister who married them wasn't properly qualified for the job.

The implications just don't bear thinking about, and to make matters worse the shocking news has been overheard by the Helliwell's highly irreverent charwoman, Mrs Northrop, who won't hesitate to make her own kind of a meal out of it.

Into this fraught situation comes Henry Ormonroyd, a bibulous photographer who has been sent with a reporter from the Yorkshire Argus to record the 'happy occasion'.
