For her first venture into music-theatre, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman, in collaboration with composer Lucy Simon, achieved Broadway success with the moving book and lyrics she adapted from Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved 1911 novel, The Secret Garden.

The story of 10-year-old orphan Mary Lennox and her search for friendship, love and an understanding of the past in her lonely uncle-guardian's locked garden has often been dramatized for the stage, the screen, radio and television, but never before has it been so fully and imaginatively realized.

Using the classic form of the traditional American musical, Norman has fashioned a faithful rendition of her source which is equally appealing to children and adults, to devotees of the novel and to Secret Garden newcomers as well.
