Responsible for: Wardrobe, dressers and casual staff

Location: London

Contract: Full-time (With a 12-week trial period)

Hours per week: 40 

Job Summary:

The wardrobe assistant is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of all costumes, shoes and accessories in the production and supports the Head of Wardrobe and the Deputy Head of Wardrobe in the day-to-day management of the department, serving as a lead creative technician and a key member of the running team.

This position is responsible for assisting with running the show and performing daily wardrobe setups, pre-sets, and checks prior to each performance.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Carry out repairs, alterations, and laundry of all costumes to the highest standard, reporting any issues to the Head of Wardrobe.

• Ensuring dry cleaning schedules are upheld.

• Assist with the management, maintenance, and organisation of the costume and accessories stock. Ensuring consumables are fully stocked.

• Assist with the daily supervision of the running wardrobe team, ensuring they are fully informed and supported in their duties.

• Assist in the refitting and alterations of all costumes.

• Help maintain all show-related paperwork, including the costume bible, dressing plots, and other records.

• Attend technical, dress rehearsals and understudy runs, taking notes and making necessary adjustments.

• Work collaboratively with other departments, including Stage Management, Wigs and the Creative team, to ensure clear communication and smooth-running performances.

• Adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures, undertaking risk assessments as necessary.

• Promote and uphold the company's culture and values, creating a positive and respectful work environment.

• Undertake any other duties reasonably required by the Head of Wardrobe, Deputy Head of Wardrobe, Company Manager, or Producers. 

• Liaise with the Head of Wardrobe / Deputy Head of Wardrobe regarding daily cast changes and prepare costumes accordingly.

• Perform the Wardrobe Assistant dressing track, cover the Deputy Head of Wardrobe dressing track or any other of the dressing plots if required.

Personal specifications: 

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a large-scale professional wardrobe department, ideally within a West End or touring production.

• Extensive knowledge of costume construction, maintenance, and repair, with excellent hand and machine sewing skills.

• Proven ability to work calmly under pressure and manage competing priorities during a fast-paced production.

• Experience in a dressing role, including preparing performers for quick changes.

• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team.

• A positive and flexible approach to working hours, which will include evenings and weekends.

• Good communication skills.

• The ability to run a busy department.

• Knowledge of sourcing materials, including fabrics and accessories.

• Experience managing or supporting a large team.

Smoking Policy

Please note that the usual place of work, The Novello Theatre, is a no-smoking/ vaping building.

Drugs & Alcohol Policy

All staff are expected to remain drug/alcohol free during working hours and take personal responsibility for presenting themselves in a fit state for work.

Show Schedule 

Currently 8 performances - Monday - Saturday, Sunday rest day. Ad hoc rehearsal and press/marketing calls.

Contract

40 hours a week over 5 days. There will usually be a day off but sometimes the 6th day will need to be worked due to holiday / sickness / department staffing issues. The position is subject to the usual BECTU rules.
