Trainspotting The Musical London: Irvine Welsh's World Premiere at Theatre Royal Haymarket

Thirty years after the film became a cultural landmark, Trainspotting is back. Written by Irvine Welsh and adapted from his bestselling debut novel, Trainspotting The Musical brings the raw energy and dark wit of Edinburgh's most notorious characters to London's West End for the very first time as a full musical production. This is a world premiere, opening at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Wednesday 15 July 2026.

What Is Trainspotting The Musical About?

Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly are back. Set against the gritty backdrop of 1980s Edinburgh, Trainspotting follows Mark Renton and his circle of friends as they navigate addiction, poverty, loyalty and the desperate search for something better. The story is one of outsiders and rebels, told with the dark humour and unflinching honesty that made Welsh's novel a generation-defining work. This new musical adaptation brings a bigger, more emotional dimension to the story, with original songs by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh alongside electrifying tracks from the era that defined a generation.

Trainspotting The Musical Cast and Creative Team

Scottish actor Robbie Scott makes his West End debut in the role of Renton, originally played on screen by Ewan McGregor. The production is directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, whose West End credits include the record-breaking run of Only Fools and Horses The Musical at the same theatre. Musical supervision comes from Stuart Morley, with set and costume design by Colin Richmond, choreography by Christina Andrea and video design by Douglas O'Connell. Further casting will be announced in due course.
