Dark of the Moon Tickets London: World Premiere Musical at Charing Cross Theatre

Something strange is stirring in the Smoky Mountains. Dark of the Moon, a brand new musical based on the classic 1941 play by Howard D Richardson and William Berney, receives its world premiere at Charing Cross Theatre from 18 May to 8 August 2026. Part Southern Gothic folk tale, part supernatural love story, this is a show that blends country, bluegrass and rock into something completely its own.

What Is Dark of the Moon About?

High in the Appalachian Mountains, two worlds collide. Barbara Allen, a human girl from a close-knit rural community, and John, a curious witch-boy from the mystical world above, find each other and fall in love. To be together, John must become human, but the deal comes with a devastating catch. As superstition and prejudice close in around them, the couple must fight for a love that neither world wants to survive. Loosely inspired by the traditional Scottish ballad Barbara Allen, the story explores themes of outsider identity, community fear and the price of belonging.

Dark of the Moon Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Georgie Rankcom, whose credits include productions at Southwark Playhouse and acclaimed revivals of Sondheim, Dark of the Moon features a book by Emmy Award nominee Jonathan Prince and music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning songwriters Lindy Robbins, Dave Bassett and Steve Robson. The creative team includes choreographer Jane McMurtrie, musical supervisor Brad Haak, musical director Matt Herbert and production designer Libby Todd. Full casting will be announced in due course.
