Head of Engineering (Scenic Construction)
Scott Fleary Productions is one of London’s leading scenic construction companies, delivering high-quality work across theatre, television, and live events. We are seeking an experienced, driven, and hands-on Head of Engineering to lead our Engineering Department.
This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of complex, creative builds while managing a highly skilled team and shaping the future of the department.
The Role
As Head of Engineering, you will oversee the construction of scenery built in metal and associated materials, ensuring projects are delivered safely, accurately, on time, and within budget. You will provide technical leadership and strategic oversight by managing workflows, improving processes and supporting the development and wellbeing of your team.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the Engineering Department in delivering high-quality scenic builds from complex technical drawings
• Plan and coordinate build schedules in collaboration with the Workshop Manager
• Maintain exceptional standards of quality, accuracy, and craftsmanship
• Promote and enforce strong health & safety and sustainability practices
• Oversee the safe use, maintenance, and management of all departmental equipment
• Foster a positive team culture, ensuring strong morale and collaboration both in department and across the company
• Support training, apprenticeships, and team development
• Lead on-site teams when required
• Review and improve departmental processes to drive efficiency and performance
About You
You will be an experienced engineering professional with a strong background in fabrication and team leadership, ideally within scenic construction or a related field.
Essential Skills & Experience
• Proven experience in scenic construction, architectural fabrication, or a similar industry
• Strong MIG and TIG welding skills
• Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and ensure accuracy across a team
• Extensive knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques
• Experience in planning, scheduling and delivering projects
• Previous leadership experience
• Strong understanding of health & safety practices in a workshop environment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Highly organised, calm under pressure and able to prioritise effectively
• Confident using standard digital tools (e.g. Windows, Google Docs)
Desirable
• Engineering NVQ or equivalent qualifications
• Coded welding certifications
• Experience in leading on-site build teams
