Breakdown
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
SEEKING:
HERO: Female. Leonato’s gentle and dutiful daughter and good friend of Beatrice. After being falsely accused of infidelity at her own wedding, she must feign death to eventually clear her name.
BORACHIO: Male. Don John’s henchman who concocts the plan to slander Hero by using his relationship with Margaret.
CLAUDIO: Male. An impetuous and naive soldier who falls head over heels for Hero. However, he is easily manipulated into believing she is unfaithful and his quickness to shame her publicly marks him as shallow.
DON JOHN: Male. The Bastard Prince and illegitimate brother of Don Pedro who serves as the play's antagonist. Motivated by envy, he creates a dark scheme to ruin Hero and Claudio’s happiness.
BENEDICK: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male. A gentleman soldier and self-proclaimed confirmed bachelor. He is manipulated by his friends into falling in love with Beatrice and abandoning his cynical view of romance.
BEATRICE: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Female. Leonato’s sharp-tongued niece. Though she scorns marriage initially, she is eventually tricked into admitting her love for Benedick.
DON PEDRO: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male, The influential and benevolent Prince of Aragon who acts as matchmaker for his friend.
LEONATO: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male. The Governor of Messina and respected host whose home serves as the setting for the play. He is a father figure who initially sides against his daughter when her honor is questioned.
ANTONIA: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Female. Leonato’s jovial sister, who has a fiery temper when challenged.
FRIAR FRANCIS: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male. The priest who presides over the failed wedding and is the first to suspect Hero’s innocence.
CONRAD: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male. A self important and second henchman to Don John.
MARGARET: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Female. Margaret is a witty and flirtatious attendant to Hero. Margaret’s romantic relationship with Borachio leads to inadvertently playing a central role in the plot to ruin Hero’s reputation.
URSULA: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Female. A long-time waitress at Bar Messina. Ursula has worked with Bar Messina for so long that she is like a family member. She would do anything for Hero and Beatrice as if they were her own family.
DOGBERRY: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male. A pompous master constable, who unwittingly (with the use of many a malapropism) unravels the plot concocted by Don Jon to smear Hero’s good name.
VERGES: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male, Dogberry’s submissive and bumbling deputy constable of the watch.
BALTHASAR: (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Male or Female?? A modest Bard and court musician to Don Pedro. Sings, “Sigh No More, Ladies”.
